Like a Chameleon

Falling into either the extrovert or introvert buckets oversimplifies our natural tendencies to adapt to our social environments which can change depending on our disposure, energy levels and other factors. It is more likely that many of us identify as ambiverts. It's hard to admit when in Western culture, extroverts tend to be most celebrated and rewarded professionally. Alternatively, Adam Grant's research posits that ambiverts (those fostering both extroverted and introverted qualities) have an "ambivert advantage." Grant notes they are "they naturally engage in a flexible pattern of talking and listening, ambiverts are likely to express sufficient assertiveness and enthusiasm to persuade and close a sale." But ambiverts are also "more inclined to listen to customers' interests and less vulnerable to appearing too excited or overconfident". Adaptability in today's unsteady times is key to stay afloat.
