Nail that interview.

Practice, practice, practice. We know behavioral interviews are hard and we have proven tactics to help you succeed. We’ll let you know what needs to be outlined in each of your responses. And don’t worry, you won’t sound like a robot.

STAR+L Interview Technique

S - Situation

Use 1 to 2 sentences to set the scene of your story. Be succinct - in depth details are not necessary at this point.

Example: My first mergers and acquisitions project was for a pharmaceuticals client with multiple subsidiaries in Europe and North America. The client hired us to strategize a plan to carve-out a subsection of its pharmaceuticals business in North America.

T - Task

Use 1 to 2 sentences to describe the responsibility assigned to you and/or the obstacles you encountered.

Example: (Responsibility) My responsibility within the team was to lead the revenue workstream. (Obstacle) However, as we continued the process, we discovered that our client did not have the documentation that we previously requested.

A - Action

Use 2 to 3 sentences to summarize the steps you took to get there.

Example: In order to resolve the problem and continue our carve-out process, I decided to take the initiative and reach out to our client’s banks for documentation. First, I reached out to the client and asked for bank contact permission. After that, I directly spoke with bank representatives.

R - Result

Explain the outcome of the story as a result of YOUR action - specifically highlight your contributions.

Example: As a result, we were able to receive all documentation within a week and send our deliverables on schedule. My action saved my team from adjusting overall client billing - allowing us to stay within the original budget.

L - Lesson

Optional. If you learned something valuable through your story, use 1 to 2 sentences to summarize it.

Example: I learned that it is always beneficial to be the one to take initiative. If I did not directly ask the client’s bank for documentation, our delivery process would have been delayed for weeks.
